As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17)
In this session, you will explore what the Bible has to say about the type of leadership Jesus desires for the church by learning about the next two responsibilities of a leader: shepherding and being an example of growing in character.
In John 4:34
34 ‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.
The Father’s work for Him was to make disciples and launch a growing community who would carry the message of new life to people around the world. This new life was a result of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The work of Jesus was to make disciples who could make disciples. This work reveals the will and purpose of the Father on earth as it is done in heaven. Jesus told his disciples, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (John 20:21).
21 Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’
Read your assigned verses and then tell the group:
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.
1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;
Church leaders must shepherd Christ’s sheep by caring and watching over them. It requires compassion. It requires looking intentionally at ways we can care for other’s needs. Paul warned us that there would be people who want to destroy or mislead others, so we must pay attention to those in our care.
